Way-finding Behavior with Verbal Communication in a Virtual Maze

We developed the multi-user system for the experiments of way-finding with verbal communication in a virtual maze. We experimented competitive-cooperative way-finding with the multi-user system: two subjects make a pair and two pairs compete with each other in finding a goal. We also experimented cooperative way-finding: four subjects cooperate in finding a goal. According to these experiments, we have found seven kinds of way-finding behaviors, state-transition from one behavior to another, kinds of communication words, and characteristics of image map drawn by subjects.

An experiment was conducted by using nine computers on the multi-user system such that eight users cooperate for finding a goal in a virtual maze. We analyzed enormous conversations to be composed of subject, oral sign of field, case and predicate. Because speaker and listener shared the same space in this experiment, many oral signs of field depended on the positional relationship between them were used. As a result, we were able to class conversations of users in limited patterns.

Despite their importance to research, there exist almost no studies on the relationship between communication and way-finding. This research aims at constructing multi-user network and at making way-finding experiments with communication in a virtual maze. We have developed "FreeWalk-VRML" that is a system for way-finding with communication in a virtual maze. We made competitive-cooperative way-finding experiment that two pairs compete with each other in finding a goal. And we made cooperative way-finding experiment that four subjects find a goal in cooperation with them.

We discuss about the relationship between way-finding behavior, architectural space, communication and image map in the experiments. We find 7 kinds of behavior according to way-finding movement and conversation. Transition of behavior is changed after finding the goal, and different between competitive-cooperative experiment and cooperative experiment. Subjects tend to transfer their behavior before finding the goal by influence of architectural space and communication, and after finding the goal by influence of other pedestrians' positions and internal reason of subject. Subjects who prefer "finding a goal together" communicate willingly and can draw image map of the maze in detail after way-finding.

There exist almost no experimental studies on the relationship of communication with architectural space and walking in way-finding. In this study, we constructed multi-user network of virtual reality and made an experiment on way-finding of three subjects together in a virtual maze. In the experiment, all avatars of subjects entered a same starting point in the virtual maze, and were asked to gather at a goal. There were there patterns of communication in this experiment because the arrival times at the goal varied with the subjects. On each pattern, we studied about the relationship of communication with architectural space and walking.
